Currently, about 300,000 Indian students reside in the United States, with Indians representing the largest group of H-1B visa holders. However, according to recent reports from The Indian Express, 20,407 Indians are now at risk of deportation due to insufficient documentation or immigration violations.
Breaking down the numbers, 17,940 Indians lack necessary documentation but remain outside Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody, while 2,467 are currently in ICE detention. India ranks fourth globally in terms of nationals in ICE custody and leads among Asian countries in this category.
The November 2024 data reveals that the total number of foreign nationals in ICE custody stands at approximately 37,000. Notably, ICE has listed India among 15 “uncooperative” countries, including Iraq and South Sudan, citing delays or reluctance in accepting returned citizens.
According to ICE’s 2024 report, deportations of Indian nationals have increased fivefold over the past four years, rising from 292 in 2021 to 1,529 in 2024. This trend aligns with the administration’s stricter enforcement of immigration policies. (USA New Immigration Policy)
