Swargate-Katraj Metro Route : The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) has assured that the Swargate-Katraj metro route will be slightly altered in the Dhanakwadi area to avoid passing directly beneath the Shankar Maharaj Samadhi (shrine). This decision comes after concerns were raised by the Sadguru Santvarya Yogiraj Shankar Maharaj Trust about the potential risk to the shrine due to the metro line’s initial proposed path. The Trust had requested a change in the route, fearing it could damage the revered shrine. Following discussions between the Trust officials and MahaMetro, the corporation has agreed to make necessary adjustments to the alignment.
MahaMetro is undertaking the 5.1-kilometer underground metro project connecting Swargate and Katraj. The project has received approval from the central government, and work is expected to commence soon based on the detailed project report (DPR). The initial plan had the metro line passing under the Sadguru Shri Shankar Maharaj Samadhi in Dhanakwadi, raising concerns about the shrine’s structural integrity. The Trust had appealed to the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and MahaMetro officials, requesting a route modification.
In light of these concerns, MahaMetro’s Executive Director, Atul Gadgil, announced that the route would be adjusted. He also mentioned that the process of naming or renaming the proposed metro station in Sahakarnagar after Sadguru Shankar Maharaj would be handled at the government level.
MahaMetro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar clarified that the Swargate-Katraj underground metro project’s overall alignment remains unchanged. The adjustment will be localized to the area near the Samadhi. He assured that all precautions would be taken to prevent any damage to properties in Dhanakwadi, Sahakarnagar, and Katraj during construction.
This decision reflects a balance between infrastructure development and respecting cultural and religious sensitivities. By altering the metro route, MahaMetro has addressed the concerns of the Trust while ensuring the progress of this important public transport project for Pune.
