Racial assault on Australian tennis star Nick Kirios

New Delhi : Australia’s legendary tennis player Nick Kyrgios faced racist comments from spectators during his loss to Andy Murray in the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open tennis tournament. Kirios posted on Instagram after losing 7-6(5), 6-2 to Murray that he heard derogatory comments from spectators in Saturday’s match.

He wrote in his story on Instagram, “When will all this stop? Facing racist comments from viewers? I know my behavior is not always the best but comments like black sheep and shut up and play etc. are not acceptable at all. This is not correct.”

After the end of the first set tie breaker, Kirios broke his racket and due to this he was fined a point. After this, a game penalty was also imposed on him for behaving against the spirit of the game in the second set. In the second set, he went to the audience and asked, “What did you say?” Kirios then sat down and did not start the match until after talking to the tournament supervisor.

Kirios wrote, “The one thing I can never tolerate is that the spectators surround and abuse the player. This is happening to me personally. From racist remarks to abusive behavior. For years I ignored it but what happened in Indian Wells and today in Stuttgart has made me realize that people think it’s a common thing.”
