Shiv Sena (Thackeray) Faces Setback as Five Corporators Likely to Join BJP
Five former corporators from Shiv Sena (Thackeray) are likely to join the BJP ahead of the upcoming municipal corporation elections. This development, along with the possible defection of several party officials next week, has dealt a blow to the Thackeray faction in Pune.

In the recent Assembly elections, the Mahayuti alliance, comprising BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde), and NCP (Ajit Pawar), secured significant victories. Meanwhile, the Maha Vikas Aghadi parties – Congress, Shiv Sena (Thackeray), and NCP (Sharad Pawar) – faced major defeats.
Two former corporators have already announced their departure from Thackeray Shiv Sena, accusing the party leadership of failing to take decisive actions for party growth. After the Shiv Sena split three years ago, eight former corporators had chosen to remain with Uddhav Thackeray’s faction. However, discussions about five of them joining the BJP have been circulating recently.
Among those planning to switch parties are former corporators Vishal Dhanwade, Bala Oswal, and three women corporators. Dhanwade and Oswal have already announced their intention to join the BJP. Dhanwade criticized the party leadership, stating that Thackeray Shiv Sena has no guardian in Pune and claimed that no meetings were held in five years to discuss party growth.
Oswal, when contacted, suggested that the party’s senior leadership should look beyond Mumbai and confirmed his imminent joining of the BJP. According to BJP sources, these five former corporators, along with other party officials, will formally join the BJP next week in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Dhanwade expressed his frustration, saying, “There’s no one to look after Shiv Sena in Pune. Despite putting in tremendous efforts to grow the party, it feels like the district doesn’t want Shiv Sena anymore. Though it’s painful to leave Shiv Sena after receiving so much love, decisions have to be made. Several other officials will also soon decide to leave Shiv Sena.”
The defections are being viewed as a significant setback for the Shiv Sena (Thackeray) faction in Pune, particularly in light of the upcoming municipal corporation elections.
