The proposed terminal will increase the airport’s capacity to handle up to 2,000 passengers daily. According to officials, this upgrade is needed because the current terminal is too small to meet rising demand. At present, Shirdi Airport handles around 700 to 800 passengers a day. “The new terminal and night landing will boost the airport’s capacity and benefit pilgrims visiting Shirdi from different parts of India,” said a senior MADC official.
The airport currently operates only during the day. With night landing systems, Shirdi Airport will be able to handle flights after sunset. This will make it easier for devotees and tourists to travel at flexible hours. The plan also includes a longer runway and better security systems. Once approved, the new terminal is expected to be built within two years.
Maharashtra’s Ex Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, had earlier asked authorities to speed up the development of Shirdi Airport. The airport plays a key role in connecting religious tourism to the Sai Baba temple, which attracts millions of visitors every year. The detailed project report (DPR) for the expansion has been sent to the state government for final approval and soon labour camps and other arrangements will be done. The Maharastra Budget 2025 have allocated the funds and the work is likely to be done by 2027.
