The Maharashtra State Legislature has approved renaming Pune’s Lohegaon Airport to “Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport, Pune.” The Maharashtra State Legislature unanimously passed the resolution and will now send it to the Central Government for final approval.

In a recent tweet, MoS Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed the decision, stating, “The proposal for renaming Pune’s Lohegaon Airport as ‘Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj International Airport, Pune’ has been approved in the Maharashtra State Legislature.”

The renaming honors Sant Tukaram Maharaj, the revered 17th-century saint, poet, and spiritual leader known for his Abhangas (devotional hymns) and contributions to the Bhakti movement. This decision celebrates his enduring legacy and deep impact on Marathi literature and spirituality, connecting the state’s cultural roots with its modern infrastructure.

Simultaneously, Pune International Airport is upgrading its facilities to improve passenger convenience. The New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) recently installed two technologically advanced inline baggage screening systems. These systems are capable of processing up to 1,400 bags per hour.

These developments position Pune International Airport as both a vital transport hub and a landmark symbolizing Maharashtra.
