On March 5, 2025, a damaged cable at the Bhama Askhed Dam’s jackwell disrupted the pumping system. This failure led to inadequate filling of the Tata Garden water tanks, reducing water supply to several neighborhoods. Affected areas include Wadgaonsheri, Sanjay Park, Vimannagar, MHADA Colony, SRA, Kulkarni Garage, Yamuna Nagar, Rajiv Gandhi North and South, Vishrantwadi, Dhanori, Lohegaon, Chandan Nagar, and Kharadi.
With water supply disruptions, many residents turned to private water tankers for relief. However, despite orders from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to assist affected areas, private tanker operators refused, prioritizing deliveries to Kharadi and Chandannagar instead. This led to public frustration, with activists protesting at the Wadgaonsheri pumping station, demanding strict action against uncooperative tanker contractors.
To resolve the water supply disruptions, PMC replaced the damaged cable at Bhama Askhed Dam, restoring the system by Saturday. However, officials noted that full water pressure would take a few days to return. Meanwhile, PMC halted water supplies to private tankers to ensure that the available water reaches the most affected areas.
This crisis is not an isolated incident. Areas like Kharadi, Chandan Nagar, and Wadgaonsheri frequently experience water supply disruptions due to pipeline maintenance and infrastructure issues. For example, repairs on the Chandan Nagar overhead storage tank pipeline have led to planned water shutdowns, highlighting the urgent need for better water management systems.
