Pune Roads Turn Deadly: Pune’s roads have become a significant safety concern, with a staggering 278 fatalities reported in 271 road accidents this year. Data from the Pune Traffic Police Department reveals that two-wheeler riders constitute the largest proportion of victims.

Accident Hotspots:
Several areas within the city have emerged as high-risk zones, including Pune-Ahmednagar Road, Solapur Road, Katraj, Hadapsar, and the Mumbai-Bengaluru bypass highway. The Pune-Solapur Road and Pune-Ahmednagar stretches are particularly notorious for serious accidents.

The inclusion of areas like Lonikand and Loni Kalbhor within the Pune police commissionerate has further exacerbated the issue due to the heavy volume of daily truck traffic on these routes. Residents and traffic experts point to the surge in heavy vehicles on city roads as a primary factor contributing to the rising accident toll.

“Daytime bans on heavy vehicles are crucial,” asserted a Katraj-Kondhwa Road resident. “Riding a bike here feels incredibly dangerous, especially with children or elderly family members. The risk of a devastating collision with a large truck is simply too high.”

Authorities have implemented measures to mitigate these risks, including a daytime ban on heavy vehicles on certain key roads. “This ban has shown some positive impact on traffic flow,” acknowledged Amol Zende, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

However, traffic experts emphasize that more stringent enforcement and comprehensive road safety measures are urgently needed to address this alarming trend. “Pune’s roads have tragically transformed into death traps for many,” stated a resident of Navi Peth.
