The Pune Municipal Corporation will soon transition to a metered water supply system, as announced by the municipal commissioner. (PMC) has highlighted several benefits of this initiative. Encourages water conservation Users will be charged based on consumption, reducing wastage. Fair billing system households will pay only for the water they use. Better resource management helps regulate supply and prevent shortages as well as leakages. It will also curb the illegal connections and supply. The corporation believe this move will create a more sustainable, equal and efficient water distribution system for the city.
Also previous bills and dues are being settled as a lot of due amount is there. Efforts in this direction are also being taken and Lok Adalat sessions are arranged by the PMC for this due clearance. The metered system will be rolled out in phases. Initially, it will cover select areas before expanding citywide. PMC has already installed water meters in some locations.
Once fully operational, residents must monitor their usage to avoid higher bills. The municipal body will conduct awareness programs to educate citizens on smart water consumption practices. Officials also plan to introduce grievance mechanisms for any issues with meter readings.
Transitioning from a flat-rate system to a metered water supply presents challenges such as meter accuracy, maintenance, and affordability. Corporation are considering subsidies and installment-based payment options to ease the shift for consumers.
