Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation cracks down on pigeon feeding : The PMC has taken a firm stance against pigeon feeding in public spaces. The step is taken in a bid to address rising concerns over public health. The civic body has been receiving numerous complaints about the health hazards posed by pigeon droppings and feathers, which can trigger respiratory ailments like asthma.

Despite repeated appeals from the PMC, many bird enthusiasts continue to disregard the rules and feed pigeons in public areas. To discourage this practice, the civic body has started imposing fines on individuals caught feeding pigeons. In the past few days, several individuals have been penalized under public cleanliness norms.

Key Pigeon Feeding Hotspots
The PMC has identified several hotspots across the city where pigeon feeding is prevalent. These include Warje Malwadi, the riverbed near Ashtabhuja Ghat, Nene Ghat, Swargate, and Sarasbaug. To effectively tackle the issue, the PMC has adopted a multi-pronged approach, such as –

Public Awareness Campaigns: The civic body is actively spreading awareness about the health risks associated with pigeon droppings and feathers.
Strict Enforcement: Special teams are conducting regular patrols in identified hotspots to catch individuals feeding pigeons.
Imposition of Fines: Offenders are being penalized under public cleanliness norms, with fines ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000.

The PMC Commissioner, Rajendra Bhosale, has emphasized the need for strict enforcement to protect public health. The solid waste management department has been tasked with overseeing the implementation of these measures.

By taking decisive action against pigeon feeding, the PMC aims to create a cleaner and healthier environment for all Pune residents.
