Pune JM Road Drainage Collapse : Blame Game Starts Between PMC and Maha-Metro
Pune JM Road Drainage Collapse : A blame game has ensued between Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) following the collapse of a drainage chamber on Jungli Maharaj (JM) Road.
PMC’s Executive Engineer, Dilip Pawara, attributed the incident to potential ground instability caused by Maha-Metro’s excavation work for a pedestrian bridge, located just 1.5 feet from the chamber. He emphasized that while Maha-Metro may not have intentionally caused the issue, greater caution during excavation was warranted.

However, Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) at Maha-Metro, refuted any responsibility, stating that all their work adheres to established regulations.
This incident raises concerns about the quality of civic work, despite PMC’s significant investment of ₹4.5 crore in 2022-23 to improve drainage infrastructure on JM Road, including constructing footpaths, rainwater channels, and replacing smaller channels with larger ones.
The recent collapse, where the ground around the chamber subsided by over five feet, necessitated immediate road closure and repair work.
The issue was first highlighted by political leader Prashant Kanojia on December 18, who alerted PMC officials to the developing pothole in front of Hotel Shubham.
