Green Paint Mandatory for Tankers : The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has made green paint mandatory for tankers supplying STP water. PMC has implemented this new regulation to prevent the misuse of treated sewage water from its Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). As part of this initiative, all tankers supplying STP water will now be painted green and prominently labeled with the warning, “This is not drinking water; it is STP water.”

This decision follows a recent incident in Kharadi, where a private tanker supplier allegedly sold treated sewage water as potable water to a housing society. Nandkishore Jagtap, Head of the PMC Water Supply Department, addressed the media, stating, “The tanker lobby has resorted to unethical practices to maximize profits, even selling treated sewage as drinking water. To address this issue, we have made it mandatory for all tankers supplying STP water to be painted green and clearly labeled as non-potable water.”

The PMC currently processes around 450 million liters of sewage daily through its nine STPs. While the treated water is generally used for construction, parks, and industrial purposes, the recent misuse of STP water for drinking has raised significant public health concerns.
The new green tanker initiative aims to raise awareness among residents and industries that use treated sewage water. The PMC’s primary goal is to ensure that STP water is used solely for its intended non-potable purposes, such as irrigation and construction, and is not misrepresented as safe drinking water.
The civic body has mandated the immediate implementation of this directive. Only green-labeled tankers will be authorized to supply STP water, and housing societies will be notified to ensure full compliance with the new regulation.
