PMC Flood Prevention Initiative : PMC to Remove Old River Barrages to Prevent Flooding
PMC Flood Prevention Initiative : The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to remove obsolete barrages from the Mula-Mutha River to prevent flooding during the monsoon season and improve water flow. These barrages, which are no longer in use, have been accumulating silt over the years, hindering the smooth flow of water and contributing to waterlogging in several areas.

The PMC has identified several locations along the Mula-Mutha river, including Vrudheshwar Siddheshwar Ghat, Dengle Pul, Shivane, Khadki, and Sangvi, where these old barrages are located. The corporation plans to coordinate with the concerned authorities and the water resources department to remove these structures. Additionally, the PMC will also clear the river beds of vegetation and debris that obstruct the water flow.
“These old barrages are no longer serving any purpose and are actually causing more harm than good,” said Prithviraj B.P., Additional Commissioner of PMC. “By removing these structures, we aim to improve the water flow and reduce the risk of flooding during the monsoon season.”
Tenders Issued for Desilting of Lakes-
The PMC has also initiated the process of awarding tenders for desilting three major lakes in the city – Katraj, Jambhulwadi, and Pashan. The accumulation of silt in these lakes reduces their water storage capacity and increases the risk of waterborne diseases.

Maintenance of Sewer Lines-
The PMC has also undertaken a comprehensive inspection of the city’s sewer lines. The civic body has identified areas where maintenance work is required and has instructed officials to prioritize these tasks. The PMC is also focusing on repairing damaged storm water drains and manholes to prevent waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
By taking these proactive measures, the PMC aims to improve the city’s drainage system and reduce the risk of flooding during the monsoon season. These efforts are part of the civic body’s ongoing efforts to make Pune a more resilient city. (PMC Flood Prevention Initiative)
