Pimpri Chinchwad Schools Face Playground Crisis: Pimpri Chinchwad’s reputation as a smart city with robust municipal infrastructure is being challenged by a growing crisis in its education sector. Despite its affluent status, 26 municipal schools within the city are operating without proper playgrounds, forcing students to resort to street play and compromising their physical development.

The issue affects nearly 20% of the city’s educational institutions, with 26 out of 123 municipal schools lacking adequate sports facilities. This deficiency particularly impacts the 105 primary and 18 secondary schools under the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) management, where multiple schools often share limited campus space.
The situation directly contradicts the Right to Education (RTE) Act’s requirements, which mandate 11 essential criteria for school approval, including a fenced playground. This infrastructure gap has created a paradox where schools operate despite failing to meet basic recognition standards.
The crisis has been exacerbated by the misuse of existing playground spaces, with many being converted into parking areas for teaching staff. This encroachment has severely impacted the mandatory sports curriculum, which requires two to four hours of weekly physical activities. While private institutions in the area successfully nurture national and international athletes, municipal school students face significant barriers to sports participation and athletic development.
In response to mounting concerns, Vijaykumar Thorat, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of the Education Department, has initiated a comprehensive gap analysis. The department is collaborating with Town Planning to assess available spaces near affected schools, promising decisive action once the survey is complete.
This playground shortage not only affects physical education but also raises serious safety concerns as students resort to playing in streets and undesignated areas. The situation highlights a growing disconnect between Pimpri Chinchwad’s smart city aspirations and the basic infrastructural needs of its educational institutions.
