The ongoing conflict between Pakistan and the Taliban has escalated into a new phase of tension. Both sides have carried out attacks, and the situation intensified when Pakistan conducted an airstrike on a Taliban-controlled region in Afghanistan. This move has raised fears of a broader confrontation, with both nations locked in an increasing power struggle.

About four dozen of people have reported to be dead in the recent airstrike on Afghanistan. The Taliban has openly responded and challenged that they will take a revenge of this attack. In the midst of all events, Taliban has once again came in the forefront of the world.

The main question rises among the public that who is Taliban and what are their intentions.

The Taliban emerged in the 1990s after Russian troops withdrew from Afghanistan. A second pivotal event in 2021, when the U.S. military withdrew, enabled the Taliban to rapidly regain control over the entire country, ultimately establishing rule. These two key developments marked the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The Taliban initially claimed their goal was to end foreign influence in Islamic regions and establish Sharia law. Many Afghans, weary of the feudal system and corruption, supported the Taliban’s rise to power. The group was welcomed in several tribal areas, where people hoped for relief from the ongoing turmoil and governance issues.

Over time, the Taliban’s religious extremism diminished their initial popularity. However, by then, they had grown too powerful, leaving people with little hope of removing them. In the early stages, it’s believed that America supported the Taliban as part of efforts to eliminate Soviet influence in Afghanistan.

But the 9/11 attacks shifted America’s stance on the Taliban. Previously, the Taliban controlled Afghanistan’s tribal and mountainous regions, offering support to terrorist activities targeting America and Europe. In response, the U.S. launched a military campaign against the Taliban for sheltering groups like Al Qaeda, which were responsible for attacks on the U.S. and Europe.

As the Taliban strengthened its control in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Taliban also gained influence. Reviving its original goal, the Pakistani Taliban resumed attacks on the Pakistani government and military. In return, Pakistan has been launching continuous strikes on Afghanistan, leading to tensions that resemble the early stages of a war.
