Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has given an important decision on the dispute regarding the number of wards in Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The total number of wards in Municipal Corporation will be 227. This has given a big blow to the Thackeray group. The number of wards in Mumbai Municipal Corporation was increased to 236 during Mahavikas Aghadi government.
The BJP protested and alleged that the decision of the Mahavikas Aghadi government was motivated by political motives. This decision was overturned by the Shinde-Fadnavis government. The High Court dismissed the petition filed against it. In this regard, the State Government and the Election Commission presented their stand in the court. The state government insisted that the structure of the ward be kept as it is.
A petition was filed by Raju Pednekar, a former corporator of the Thackeray group, against this decision of the Shinde-Fadnavis government. Raju Pednekar had said in the petition that the decision taken by the Mahavikas Aghadi government is correct and considering the increased population of Mumbai, there should be 236 wards, assuming that according to the census the number of seats for public representatives may increase.
The state government has said that it is not appropriate to change the structure of the ward only on the basis of population growth.
