Mumbai: A bus fell into a 200-feet-deep gorge behind Shingroba temple in Khopoli area on the Mumbai-Pune Old Highway on Saturday morning. 12 passengers aboard the bus were killed, while over 25 passengers were injured. On receiving the information of the accident, the police started the rescue operation on the spot. Police is trying to get the injured out of the bus. At the same time, the local people are also helping the police in the rescue operation.
SP Somnath Gharge of Raigarh district told that there were 40 to 45 passengers in the bus, out of which 12 passengers have died, while more than 25 passengers are injured. Rescue operation is still going on. A crane has been called to remove the bus. People belonging to an organization of Goregaon area were travelling in the bus. All of them had gone to attend a program in Pune. They were returning from Pune.
According to SP Somnath Gharge, the reason for the accident is not yet clear. It is yet to investigates whether the accident happened due to the negligence of the driver or there could be some other reason. The SP told that the injured are being rescued and admitted to the nearby government hospital. Those whose condition is critical are being sent to the district hospital.
On the other hand, according to the people engaged in relief and rescue work, so far only 20 to 25 people have been rescued. Rescue is being done by tying a rope to the crane. Due to the bus falling into the deep ditch, there is a problem in the rescue. A team of local trackers along with a team of police and fire brigade is engaged in the rescue.
