A 25-year-old woman, nine months pregnant, suffered severe brain injuries in a scooter accident in Parner on January 20. Following the accident, she was initially treated at a local hospital where doctors performed an emergency cesarean section to save her baby. The patient was subsequently transferred to DPU Super Specialty Hospital via an advanced life support ambulance.
Despite intensive medical efforts, doctors declared the woman brain dead. In an extraordinary act of altruism, her husband and father consented to organ donation. According to Aarti Gokhale, Central Coordinator of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), the incident occurred while the woman was riding pillion with her husband.
The hospital successfully performed multiple organ transplants:
- One kidney and liver were transplanted to critical local recipients
- The second kidney was allocated to the common pool through ZTCC, Pune
- Both corneas were successfully retrieved for transplantation
Dr. Bhagyashree Patil, Pro-Chancellor of Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, praised the family’s decision: “Despite their immense grief, the family’s extraordinary courage transformed a tragedy into a beacon of hope for others.”
Dr. Vrishali Patil, Program Director and HOD of Multi-Organ Transplant at DPU Super Specialty Hospital, emphasized that this complex life-saving procedure showcased their team’s capabilities and advanced medical facilities, while highlighting the family’s incredible humanity during an unimaginable tragedy.
