New Delhi: One Nation – One Election Bill : The central government led by PM Narendra Modi may introduce the ‘One Nation – One Election’ (ONOE) bill during the current or next parliamentary session. The bill could be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed discussion. The report on ‘One Nation – One Election’ by the Ramnath Kovind Committee has already been approved by the cabinet.

The government wants to build a consensus and have extensive discussions with all stakeholders. The JPC will discuss with representatives of all political parties. Additionally, speakers of all state assemblies may be invited. The opinions of intellectuals and common people across the country will also be sought.

The advantages of ‘One Nation – One Election’ and methods of implementation will be extensively discussed. The government hopes to build a general consensus on the bill.

The committee led by former President Ramnath Kovind had contacted 62 political parties. Out of these, 32 supported ‘One Nation – One Election’, while 15 were against it. 15 parties did not respond.
