Mahayuti Government at Risk Without ‘Finance Portfolio’ for NCP
Party Insists on Ajit Pawar’s Leadership of Ministry
Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has made it clear that the Mahayuti government (Mahayuti Government Ajit Pawar Finance Portfolio) will lose its significance if the party and its national president, Ajit Pawar, do not receive the finance portfolio. NCP spokesperson Amol Mitkari made the statement following Ajit Pawar’s meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Thursday.
“If Ajit Pawar does not get the finance ministry, the government will have no meaning,” Mitkari said, emphasizing the importance of the portfolio for the NCP. Along with Ajit Pawar, NCP leaders Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, and Rajya Sabha MP Sunetra Pawar were also present during the meeting.
Mitkari highlighted that before the 2024 elections, Maharashtra had witnessed the successful implementation of welfare schemes like the ‘Ladki Bahin Yojana’ and farmer electricity bill waivers. He asserted that with Ajit Pawar as Finance Minister, Maharashtra could avoid unnecessary financial burdens while ensuring sound financial discipline. “The finance ministry suits Ajit Pawar, just as the home ministry suits the BJP. Therefore, it should remain with the NCP; otherwise, the Mahayuti government holds no value,” Mitkari added. (Mahayuti Government Ajit Pawar Finance Portfolio)

Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar discussed the issue of sugarcane prices with Amit Shah, requesting an increase in the sugarcane rate. Shah promised to take a decision by January. Ajit Pawar also confirmed that discussions regarding the cabinet expansion would take place on December 14.
However, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was also in New Delhi on Thursday, downplayed speculation over cabinet expansion, stating that no specific date had been set. He reiterated that the decision regarding ministers would be made within each party. “Ajit Pawar has come here for his personal work and will make decisions regarding his ministers, while Eknath Shinde will do the same for his,” Fadnavis remarked.
The Mahayuti government, which was sworn in on December 5, has yet to finalize its cabinet expansion. While the Shiv Sena, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has made a strong case for the Home Ministry and Urban Development Department, the NCP continues to push for the Finance Ministry, a key portfolio that Ajit Pawar previously held in the last Mahayuti government.
