Supreme Court orders Mumbai Metro to stop tree felling in Aarey

Mumbai : The Supreme Court has stayed the felling of trees in Aarey forest in Mumbai. Environmentalists had approached the Supreme Court against the felling of trees for the Metro car shed. After that the hearing was held today. Mumbai Metro claimed that no tree felling took place. The next hearing of this case will be held on August 10.

The case was heard in the Supreme Court before a three-judge bench headed by Justice Lalit. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued on behalf of Mumbai Metro Corporation. He said that no tree felling was done in Aarey. He told the court that not a single tree was cut after the order was issued in November 2019. However, during this time, some bushes and weeds had grown. It has been removed. Apart from that, some tree branches have been cut. However, Mumbai Metro claimed that no trees were felled.

Senior advocate Chander Uday Singh appeared for the petitioners. Inspite of previous order, felling of trees has started once again for the Metro Carshed project in Aarey. Despite the committee’s report that a metro carshed should be constructed at Kanjurmarg, the metro authorities have started efforts for a carshed in Aarey. He raised the issue of trees being cut in this area.

The bench hearing the matter said that there is a need to hear the matter in detail. The next date for the hearing is August 10.
