Kohli Fined 20% Match Fee After Shoulder Bump Incident with Konstas
Virat Kohli, has been fined 20% of his match fee following an incident with England’s Sam Konstas during the ongoing Test series. Kohli was penalized after he shoulder bumped Sam Konstas at the MCG on Thursday morning. The incident took place after Kohli and Sam Konstas had an heated exchange on field.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) reached its decision after a hearing led by match referee Andy Pycroft, held following the close of play. Kohli accepted the penalty without contest, avoiding further disciplinary action.
Cricket is not a contact sport, and there are specific rules regarding body contact. According to Article 2.12 of the ICC code, any form of inappropriate physical contact is forbidden. This includes instances where players deliberately or recklessly make physical contact with another player or umpire, such as shoulder nudges or collisions while running or walking.

The incident took place after the 10th over on Day One of the Test when Kohli was seen nudging Australian debutant in front of a 90,000-strong crowd at the MCG. This led to a brief exchange between the players, with Usman Khawaja stepping in to diffuse the situation. Kohli’s actions sparked immediate backlash, including calls from Ricky Ponting for sanctions against the Indian batter.
Kohli’s demerit points will remain on his disciplinary record for the next 24 months. This was his first violation in that period. The demerit point from Thursday will remain in effect for the next two years.
