New Delhi: On the morning of 19 August, the share of IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) saw a rise of 4%. The share of IRCTC opened on BSE on Friday at Rs 712 and reached Rs 746.75 in a short time. The reason for the rise in the share of IRCTC is the new plan of the company.

According to reports, the ticket booking arm of Indian Railways is planning a revenue plan of Rs 1000 crore through digital monetization. IRCTC has also issued a tender for this. There are some such things in this tender, about which questions related to privacy and safety are being raised in the minds of the users.

The Internet Freedom Foundation has shared a lot of information on this. It has been said in the tender that IRCTC will appoint a consultant, who will suggest them on ways to monetize the data of users.

IRCTC has more than 100TB data of users. In this, all the details are available to book the ticket, from whose name to the number. In such a situation, many people feel that the government is planning to earn money by selling their personal details.

Will the government sell your personal data?
It is difficult to answer yes or no. You have to understand it in detail. The company will never give up control over this data. That is, your data or 100TB data with IRCTC will never be sold. At least according to the information received so far, it is so.

Because from this they will earn only once. Rather, their plan is beyond that. The company will use this data from time to time to earn money. For example, you are travelling in a train. You will use e-catering to order food. It is possible that the next time you travel, you will start getting notifications from some e-catering companies from where you can directly order food for yourself.

What is the plan of IRCTC?
How IRCTC will use this data is not clear yet. The company says that it wants to improve the user experience in this way. It will also earn money by sharing data with third parties.

In such a situation, the concern of IFF (Internet Freedom Foundation) and others is about the privacy of the users. How will IRCTC share this data with third party vendors in case there is no data protection law?

Earlier, IFF has also written a letter to the government regarding the vehicle data base. The Internet Freedom Foundation fears that users’ data may be misused.
