HMPV Cases Found in Maharashtra : Two children, aged seven and 14, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, have tested positive for Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), bringing the total number of confirmed cases in India to seven. The children were admitted to a private hospital in Ramdaspeth on January 3 with symptoms including fever and cough. Subsequent tests confirmed the presence of HMPV, a respiratory virus that can infect both the upper and lower respiratory tracts, leading to symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, and sore throat.

In response to these new cases, the Maharashtra health department has issued an alert, advising individuals experiencing Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) symptoms to take necessary precautions. Authorities have assured the public that detailed guidelines on the prevention and management of HMPV will be issued shortly.

HMPV infections have also been reported in other Indian states, including Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. While the number of cases is increasing, Union Health Minister JP Nadda emphasized that HMPV is not a newly discovered virus, having been recognized globally since its initial identification in the Netherlands in 2001. He reassured the public that the central government is closely monitoring the situation and implementing necessary measures to safeguard public health.

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra reviewed the current situation, noting that while there hasn’t been a significant surge in respiratory illnesses, states are urged to enhance public awareness and strengthen surveillance efforts. Sporadic cases of HMPV have been previously recorded in India. (HMPV Cases Found in Maharashtra)
