Leaders across Maharashtra have responded strongly, emphasizing that Marathi is the soul of Mumbai. Many argue that while Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city, Marathi remains a crucial part of its cultural identity. Some political figures of Shivsena (UBT) and congress have widely criticized this statement by the RSS leader. Sanjay Raut specially has attacked the Government over the statement and said that if this was said in other states would this be tolerated. He even mentioned can you say the same thing in CM Yogi’s state. Parties like MNS are more likely to criticize this statement as they have always pushed the use of Marathi in Maharashtra.
The RSS leader also mentioned that different area’s in Mumbai have different languages and called Gujarati as the language of Ghatkopar. This statement follows the recent work of Maharashtra government in promoting the language Marathi in schools and across the board and making the language mandatory whether it be ICSE or CBSE. While in the recent times the language debate has been a critical issue in India specially the rift between north and south such remarks act as a fuel to such situations.
