GBS Outbreak in Pune: Pune is witnessing a surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases over the past few days. The city has recorded 163 suspected cases so far, with 5 suspected deaths. On Monday, 5 new cases were reported.

Research on Disease Spread:
Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health, stated that the Animal Husbandry Department is conducting comprehensive research to determine the causes of increasing GBS cases. The investigation extends beyond water testing to include samples from various birds, poultry farms, and soil.
21 Patients on Ventilator Support:
According to Dr. Pawar, GBS cases have been detected in Pune and surrounding areas since January 9. Of the 163 suspected cases:
- 32 cases from Municipal Corporation areas
- 86 cases from newly included areas
- 18 cases from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation
- 19 cases from Pune rural areas
- 8 cases from other districts
Currently, 111 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals, with 47 patients discharged after complete recovery. Among those hospitalized, 47 are in ICU, with 21 patients requiring ventilator support.
Comprehensive Investigation Underway:
Dr. Pawar explained that water samples have been tested through various teams from Pune Municipal Corporation, state government, and central government. Additionally, the Animal Husbandry Department is collecting samples from poultry farms in the Khadakwasla region, including soil samples, bird throat swabs, and excreta. This comprehensive investigation aims to understand why cases are increasing in specific areas.
