After 27 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form a government in Delhi. Sources indicate that the new Chief Minister’s swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on February 20. A day before, on February 19, the BJP legislative party meeting is expected to occur. While no venue has been officially confirmed, the Ram Leela Maidan is considered a strong possibility for the ceremony.
Initially, the legislative party meeting was scheduled for February 17 but was postponed. Before finalizing the Chief Minister’s name, the party will first meet with the legislators.
For the past few days, high-level discussions have been underway in Delhi regarding the selection of the new Chief Minister. Several names, including Pravesh Verma, Ashish Sood, and Rekha Gupta, have been speculated for the role. However, BJP leadership has remained tight-lipped. The party had previously announced that it would stake its claim to form a government in Delhi after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from his US trip. PM Modi was in France and the US from February 10 to 13.
Six Names in the Race for Delhi CM-
In the race for Chief Minister, Pravesh Verma is currently the frontrunner, having defeated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat. Other prominent names include Ashish Sood, General Secretary of Delhi BJP and legislator from Janakpuri, known for his close ties with central leaders. Rekha Gupta, an MLA from Shalimar Bagh, is also considered a contender for the position, especially as a woman candidate. The name of Rohini MLA Vijender Gupta is also being discussed, given his seniority and his tenure as the leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly.
Satish Upadhyay, a prominent Brahmin face and former Delhi BJP president from Malviya Nagar, is another strong contender. Jitender Mahajan, an RSS strongman from the Vaishya community, is also in the race. Party leaders have hinted at the possibility of appointing a woman CM or introducing a completely new face. Shikha Roy, who recently defeated AAP’s Saurabh Bhardwaj in Greater Kailash, is reportedly another prominent female face under consideration.
15 MLAs Shortlisted for Ministerial Positions –
According to sources, 15 MLAs have been shortlisted for key ministerial roles. There is no likelihood of a deputy CM position in the new government, sources added. Top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Party President JP Nadda, are expected to hold a meeting to finalize the details.
In the recently concluded Delhi Assembly elections, BJP won 48 out of 70 seats, overthrowing AAP and marking a historic win. AAP, which had governed Delhi for over 10 years, managed only 22 seats in this highly competitive election. This marks the first time since 1993 that the BJP will form a government in Delhi.
