CM Fadnavis Orders to Demolish Mosque: Colaba was the safe landing spot for Pakistani terrorists in 2008 Mumbai Attacks. Ajmal Amir Kasab and his fellow terrorists had entered India from Pakistan via sea route in Mumbai. Since the attack, government is very alert to prevent such incidents. Now, CM Devendra Fadnavis has decided to take action against an illegal dargah located in Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation area which is allegedly emerging as another safe landing spot for terrorists. Its location is very close to the sea. ‘Illegal activities’ have allegedly increased rapidly here in the last four-five years. (CM Fadnavis Orders to Demolish Mosque)

The Maharashtra government intends to completely demolish this dargah by May 2025. CM Devendra Fadnavis has also passed an order regarding this. In a secret letter written to the collector of Mira Bhayander in 2011, the police had described this dargah as a major threat to security. Due to its location on the seashore, it was feared that terrorists could enter Mumbai through this route and use the dargah to hide.
Police had issued warning 14 years ago
This concern of government is not baseless. The 26/11 terror attack is also a witness to this. Ajmal Kasab and other terrorists of 26/11c Mumbai attack used the Colaba beach to enter India. So, this dargah is being seen as a potential “safe landing spot”. However, the lack of concrete evidence to prove this threat raises a question. Is this just a suspicion or is there some intelligence behind it? In the last 14 years i.e. since 2011, no terrorist activity related to this dargah has been reported. In such a situation, is it being removed merely as a precaution?
On the other hand, the government is also keeping an eye on the increasing encroachment around the dargah. Illegal houses are being built here by cutting mangrove trees. Which can be a matter of concern for the security agencies. There has been encroachment in 70,000 square feet area around the dargah. This is a clear violation of CRZ rules. Mangroves are an important part of the coastal ecosystem, which prevents sea erosion and preserves biodiversity. Despite warnings of strict action on cutting of mangroves and construction, this encroachment has increased in the last few years. It was told that illegal activities have increased here especially after the Covid period.
