20% Twitter accounts fake, Deal can’t move forward : Elon Musk

New Delhi : The Twitter deal is not likely to go ahead for the time being. There is a war between Twitter CEO Parag Agarwal and Elon Musk over a spam account on Twitter. Tesla Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk says the Twitter deal cannot proceed on the basis of offering 20 percent spam or fake accounts. Elon Musk estimates that at least 20 percent of the 229 million accounts on Twitter are being operated by ‘spam bots’. Which is 4 times the claim of Twitter or can be even more.

Last week Twitter reported that the microblogging site had about 5 percent of spam accounts in the quarter. Tesla CEO rubbished Twitter’s claims and shelved the deal. Musk later clarified that he is still “committed to the acquisition.”

Experts believe that it could be Musk’s ploy to buy Twitter at a price lower than what was initially offered. Elon Musk last month offered to buy Twitter for $44 billion. Ever since Musk announced the purchase of Twitter, the company’s stock has lost all of its profits after the Tesla CEO disclosed his stake.

Amidst all the anticipation, Musk recently said that bargaining at a low price is not meaningless. It clearly states that Musk is trying to get as low a Twitter bid as possible. “You can’t pay the price for something that’s worse than what they claim,” Musk told a conference in Miami on Monday.

Musk has always been against spam accounts on Twitter. In fact, he once said that spam accounts are “the most annoying problem” on Twitter. As a Twitter boss, Musk is expected to first work towards removing spam and fake accounts from the platform once the acquisition is complete. One of the most recent reports suggested that almost half of Musk’s followers are fake.

CEO Parag Agarwal said in a Twitter thread that the company works hard to remove fake and spam accounts from the platform. Agarwal said that Twitter suspends more than half a million spam accounts every day. “We constantly update our systems and rules to remove as much spam as possible,” he said.
