With the successful operation of two Vande Bharat Express trains from Pune, the railway administration is exploring the introduction of the more affordable Amrut Bharat Express to connect Pune with key destinations in North India.
The Amrut Bharat Express, known for its design inspired by the Vande Bharat Express but without air-conditioning, was first launched between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar in July 2023. This low-cost, efficient travel option has gained significant traction among passengers. The railways aim to replicate this success by introducing similar services on select routes from Pune, offering budget-friendly and convenient travel options for a wider segment of travelers.

The redevelopment of 20 railway stations, including Pune and Hadapsar, is currently underway under the Amrut Bharat Scheme. Concurrently, the production of new coaches, modeled after the Vande Bharat Express, is progressing with several projects nearing completion. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared these updates during his recent visit to Pune.
Currently, Pune runs two Vande Bharat Express routes – one to Kolhapur and another to Hubli. While these trains offer a comfortable and modern travel experience, their fares range from ₹1,160 to ₹2,005, which can be a significant expense for many travelers.
The Amrut Bharat Express is expected to address this concern with sleeper-class fares comparable to regular trains, making it a more accessible option for budget-conscious travelers.
Preliminary plans include routes connecting Pune Station to Danapur and Chhapra, and Hadapsar Station to Muzaffarpur and Puri. Recognizing the high demand for travel to North India from Pune, the railways are conducting feasibility studies to finalize these routes and ensure their successful implementation.
The introduction of the Amrut Bharat Express from Pune marks a significant step towards enhancing railway connectivity and providing more affordable travel options for passengers. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of modernizing railway infrastructure and making rail travel accessible to all.
