How many Tons of AC Does a Normal Car Have: AC in a car is most important feature now a days. All cars have this feature provided by default. The AC in a car provides peaceful journey experience in both hot and cold weathers. But have you ever wondered, how many tons of AC a normal car have? (How many Tons of AC Does a Normal Car Have)
What Ton is mean in AC?
Ton is used to measure the capacity of Air Conditioner’s capacity. Ton in AC means the capacity in which 2,204 pounds of ice can melt completely in 24 hours. In terms of energy, ton is approximately equal to 3.52 kilowatts. In AC used at home, 12,000 British Thermal Unit (BTU) is considered as 1 ton; that is, 1.5 ton AC has a capacity of 18,000 BTU and 2 ton AC has a capacity of 24,000 BTU.
How does an AC work in a car?
The AC in a car works in two modes, one is heating and second one is cooling.
- Heating mode
Use of engine heat: The heat from the engine is transferred to the coolant.
Flow in the heater core: The heated coolant passes through the heater core, heating the air.
Flow of hot air in the cabin: This hot air enters the cabin through the vents, which increases the temperature of the car. - Cooling mode
Compressor of refrigerant: The compressor compresses the refrigerant gas at high pressure and temperature.
Cooling in the condenser: This hot air enters the condenser, where it cools down and turns into liquid.
Passing through the expansion valve: This liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, which reduces its pressure.
Evaporation in the evaporator: The low-pressure refrigerant enters the evaporator, where it evaporates and absorbs the heat of the cabin, due to which the cabin remains cool.
Capacity of AC in car –
The capacity of AC in cars depends on the size and type of vehicle:
- Hatchback and sedan: These have a single cooling point system, whose capacity ranges from 1 to 1.2 tonnes.
- Compact SUV: These also have a single cooling point system, but its capacity can be from 1.3 to 1.4 tonnes.
- Large SUV and MPV: These have a dual cooling point system, whose capacity ranges from 1.4 to 1.5 tonnes.
