Maharashtra Budget 2025: Ajit Pawar, Deputy CM and Finance Minister of Maharashtra presented the state budget for 2025-26 today. He announced significant allocations for infrastructure development in major cities including Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. Metro Network Expansion –
Ajit Pawar highlighted that metro services spanning 143.57 kilometers are currently operational in Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune. The metro network in these cities are providing environmentally friendly, sustainable, and air-conditioned transportation to approximately 1 million passengers daily.
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar announced that in the coming year, an additional 64.4 kilometers of metro lines will become operational, (41.2 kilometers in Mumbai and 23.2 kilometers in Pune). A total of 237.5 kilometers of metro networks will be functional across the state in next five years. He said added that the first phase of Nagpur Metro has been completed which covers 40 kilometers network. While work on the second phase (a 43.80-kilometer stretch) costing ₹6,708 crore, is progressing rapidly.
New Metro Routes Approved –
The central government has approved the Thane Circular Metro and the Swargate to Katraj extension corridor in Pune. Additionally, a proposal for Pune Metro Phase-2 (Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Nal Stop-Warje-Manikbag routes), has been submitted to the central government for approval. It will cost approx ₹9,897 crore.
Ajit Pawar also announced that work on the metro line connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport will commence soon.
Navi Mumbai International Airport Update –
The Navi Mumbai International Airport is being developed on 1,160 hectares in Ulwe. The airport will have an annual capacity to handle 90 million passengers and 2.6 million tons of cargo. Approximately 85% of the project has been completed. Test flights have been successfully conducted on this airport. Domestic flight services from this airport are scheduled to begin in April 2025.
Road Infrastructure Developments –
The Finance Minister Ajit Pawar announced that the missing link project between Khopoli and Khandala on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be completed by August 2025. He said that this will save both travel time and fuel while alleviating traffic congestion.
There are plans to construct an elevated corridor between Thane to Navi Mumbai International Airport. This route will connect Thane, Dombivli, Kalyan, and other important cities to the international airport. The 13.45-kilometer Balkum to Gaimukh coastal road in Thane will be completed by the end of 2028. It will cost approximately ₹3,364 crore.
Key Budget Announcements:
- The Swatantryaveer Savarkar Sea Bridge between Bandra and Versova, a 14-kilometer project costing ₹18,120 crore, will be completed by May 2028
- A 55-kilometer sea bridge and connecting roads from Uttan to Virar, costing ₹87,427 crore, will be undertaken
- Construction of a 54-kilometer elevated corridor from Pune to Shirur costing ₹7,515 crore will commence
- A policy providing financial incentives for modern boats offering safe travel from Gateway of India, Mumbai, to Mandwa and Elephanta will be announced
- The Mumbai Metropolitan Region will be developed as an international-standard economic development center or “Growth Hub”
- Seven international-standard business centers will be established at Bandra-Kurla Complex, Kurla-Worli, Wadala, Goregaon, Navi Mumbai, Kharghar, and Virar-Boisar
These infrastructure initiatives aim to significantly enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and boost economic development across Maharashtra’s major urban centers.
