The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health department is set to establish intensive care units (ICUs) at three key civic hospitals in the city — Kamala Nehru Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, and Sonawane Hospital. These ICUs will be managed by expert doctors and trained medical staff, according to PMC officials.

The proposal for 15-bed ICUs at each hospital will be submitted to the municipal commissioner on Monday for final approval.
Dr. Nina Borade, the head of PMC’s health department, explained that currently, there are no ICU facilities at any of the municipal healthcare institutes in Pune. She emphasized that this move will significantly enhance medical services and provide better treatment for patients requiring emergency medical care.
Health activist Sharad Shetty commented, “The establishment of ICUs in civic hospitals is a much-needed initiative, but ensuring that there is sufficient trained staff, proper maintenance, and continuous funding is essential. These services should also be provided free of charge.”
Anita Jadhav from Mangalwar Peth, whose family has depended on civic hospitals, expressed her relief, stating, “This is great news for common people like us. Private hospitals are expensive, and the ICU at Sassoon General Hospital is always overcrowded.”
