The accused, identified as Nilesh Hiranand Virkar, was apprehended while suspiciously roaming near Padmavati bus stop on Pune-Satara road. Upon interrogation, Virkar confessed to receiving the counterfeit notes from a gang operating in Mumbai. Following his lead, the police arrested four more individuals involved in the racket, including Saifan Kayyum Patel, Afzal Samsuddin Shah, Shahid Jakki Kureshi, and Shahfahad alias Sonu Firoz Ansari.
Investigations revealed that the counterfeit currency was being circulated in Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, and Ghaziabad. The gang members were procuring the fake notes from Delhi and Ghaziabad and then supplying them to their associates in Mumbai and Pune. The counterfeit notes were being exchanged for genuine currency at a discounted rate.
The gang operated in a well-organized manner. Shahfahad, the alleged kingpin, would procure counterfeit notes from Delhi and Ghaziabad and then distribute them to his associates in Mumbai. These associates, in turn, would supply the counterfeit notes to their contacts in Pune.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Senior Police Inspector Chagan Kapse conducted a raid and apprehended Nilesh Virkar. Further investigations led to the arrest of the other gang members. The police have seized over 2,070 counterfeit ₹500 notes worth approximately ₹10.35 lakh.
“Nilesh Virkar was apprehended by Sahakarnagar police while he was moving around suspiciously. Initially, counterfeit currency notes were found in his possession. During the interrogation, he revealed that he had obtained these notes from Mumbai. Further investigation revealed that the accused in Mumbai had procured these notes from Delhi. The police are now investigating the matter in Delhi and Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.” – Smartana Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 2.
The bust of this fake currency racket highlights the increasing sophistication of financial crimes. The police have launched a massive manhunt to nab other members of the gang who are still at large. (Pune Fake Currency Racket)
