Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved a 100-day plan to address these issues in key regions like Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune. Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar’s plan aims to regulate the surge in private vehicle ownership.
If implemented, car buyers in cities like Mumbai would need to prove they have access to parking space before registering their vehicles. This measure is part of a broader strategy to curb the rise in four-wheeler ownership, a significant contributor to road congestion and air pollution.
Inspired by successful models in cities like London, Tokyo, New York, Zurich, and Singapore, the proposal suggests a phased enforcement of parking space requirements. The government plans to upgrade public transport while simultaneously restricting private vehicle registrations.
This approach aims to balance the need for private vehicles with efforts to reduce traffic and improve air quality. The government will collaborate with housing societies, civic bodies, and transport experts to identify suitable parking spaces and enforce these new regulations.
