The controversy was sparked by an X user, The Kaipullai, who highlighted the lack of clear communication regarding speed limits along the expressway and surrounding areas. The user pointed out that numerous speed cameras have been installed in locations like Vashi, Panvel, and Pune, leading to unexpected fines for drivers who unknowingly exceed the limit.
The Kaipullai shared a personal experience of receiving a challan for driving at 70 kmph on a road in Panvel, where the speed limit was allegedly 60 kmph. This incident resonated with many motorists, who expressed similar grievances about facing unexpected fines and a lack of clear signage indicating speed restrictions.
The controversy has rekindled debates surrounding the high toll charges and excessive fines levied on Indian highways. In June 2024, entrepreneur Sandeep Manudhane urged the central government to abolish all highway tolls, citing “extortionate taxation.” Another user lamented paying Rs 760 in toll for a 500 km journey, highlighting the perceived exorbitance of these fees.
This incident has sparked a wider conversation about the critical need for clearer signage, more reasonable speed limits, and fairer fines on Indian highways. Motorists are demanding that authorities address these concerns to ensure a safer and more equitable driving experience for all. (Mumbai-Pune Expressway Speed Limit Confusion)
