Airport Screening Remains Absent

Pune Prepares for HMPV: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking proactive measures to address concerns surrounding the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that has been detected in India. While no cases have been reported in Pune, the PMC has reserved 50 beds initially and has been directed by the Maharashtra Health Department to reserve an additional 350 beds as a precautionary measure. The health department has also issued guidelines to the public, emphasizing the importance of hygiene, mask-wearing, and social distancing.

The Maharashtra Health Department has directed the PMC to reserve 350 additional beds, bringing the total to 400. Dr. Vaishali Jadhav, Assistant Health Officer at PMC, stressed the importance of vigilance and urged citizens to follow preventive measures such as hand hygiene, mask-wearing, and avoiding crowded places.

Despite these efforts, concerns have arisen due to the absence of passenger screening at Lohegaon Airport, a crucial step in early detection and containment of infectious diseases. While the PMC emphasizes the importance of hygiene and public awareness, the lack of airport screening has raised concerns among citizens and healthcare professionals.

While airport screening requires directives from the central government, the PMC is actively monitoring the situation and will continue to assess the need for such measures.

HMPV primarily affects children, the older people, and immunocompromised individuals. Symptoms often mimic other respiratory infections, making early detection and containment crucial.

The PMC has issued public advisories emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in preventing the spread of HMPV. Citizens are encouraged to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, weakness, or respiratory issues.
