55 Trees to be Transplanted for PMC Hospital Project
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC news) is in the process of transforming the 30-acre PMC news into a PMC hospital affiliated with a medical college. However, this ambitious infrastructure project has sparked opposition from activists and citizens. The plan to cut down some trees for the hospital project has raised concerns among environmentalists, as it would further reduce the city’s already shrinking green cover.

To save the trees, the Pune Dialogue civic group organized a public tree hearing and a site visit. The group’s volunteers played a crucial role in advocating for the protection of the site’s trees and, through these efforts, proposed an alternative design plan. As part of this development, the PMC had initially planned to cut down all 127 trees on a 6-acre portion of the Naidu Hospital site for the construction of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College.
Working with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC news) officials and consultants, the Pune Dialogue civic group helped develop a revised plan that complied with tree conservation rules under the Tree Act. The new design preserved 64 trees, reducing the proposed tree cutting to 63. As a result of these efforts, the PMC agreed to transplant 55 trees in the same area, reducing the total number of trees to be cut to only eight. This revised proposal will now be resubmitted to the tree authority for approval.
